Principal concepts, major approaches and activities, and role of governance and civil society will be highlighted. Lectures and discussions will take place in the morning sessions, while parallel workshops will be organized in the afternoon. Lectures will primarily use the case study approach and especially focus on recent peace-building activities of national and international governmental and non-governmental stakeholders in the word. The overall purpose of the afternoon workshops is be to provide practical training in the skills essential to effective and sustainable conflict resolution/organizational development and mutually beneficial relationships. These workshops are also expected to integrate what has been learned in the morning sessions. The workshops will be split into five groups, each focusing on specific problem areas: constitutionalism and legislation, political parties and electoral processes, civil society and organizational development, social policy and gender issues, and peace and security policy. The goal of this exercise is to engage in deep analysis of the problems under each topic and to make recommendations that are likely to address not only the specific problems, but also to contribute of long-term peace-building in conflict areas. Each group will: identify and critical problems in the area, describe and analyze their root causes, identify countries with the greatest manifestation of these problems, outline approaches and measures to cause change, specify the necessary conditions of effectiveness by actors (national, regional and international governmental and non-governmental).
